What can I do to help?

There are a lot of simple ways you can help to make a meaningful difference in addressing homelessness. Click on the boxes below to learn more, and select the actions that are a fit for you. On the form at the bottom of this page, please also share with us your ideas about actions that can help, or tell us about actions you took to help inform and inspire others to take action.

Speak Up
  • Learn More. Increase your understanding of causes and solutions to homelessness.
  • With Us. Take the CLOSE TO HOME Pledge. We will communicate your support to decision makers. Your voice makes a difference!
  • Share CLOSE TO HOME information on your social media using the hashtag #CloseToHomeCO
  • Involve Others. Share information from CLOSE TO HOME with your neighbors, classmates, co-workers, friends, and family members. Also include groups like PTA, churches, and neighborhood associations.
  • You’re It. Your elected officials need to hear from YOU to understand this is a priority. Tell them everyone needs a safe place to call home. Here are some tips on how to do this.
  • Kind Words. Use smarter, kinder language. By using expressions such as “people experiencing homelessness” rather than labels, we remind ourselves and others that people who are in such situations are people – people who are going through a difficult period in their lives.

  • Caring Contact. Be kind when you meet someone experiencing homelessness. Make eye contact, smile, and say a few words. Let them know you see them and they matter. Read more on how to engage and be safe.
  • Caring Card. Hand out the CLOSE TO HOME “Caring Card” to tell others about the campaign and provide support for people currently experiencing homelessness.
  • Care Basics. Create and distribute homeless “survival kits” with items such as cups, pots, pans, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and cosmetics. Donate new or gently used clothing. For a list of charitable organizations that are seeking items, click here.

  • Show It. Put a link to the CLOSE TO HOME website on your website. Add the CLOSE TO HOME logo and/or messages to your materials and paid advertising, co-branding to show your support.
  • Involve Others. Share information about CLOSE TO HOME with staff, partners and others in meetings and at events.
  • You’re It. Tell elected officials it is important to your organization that everyone has a safe place to call home. Here are some tips on how to do this.

  • Your Time. Organize a volunteer day, create and distribute survival or move-in kits, or brainstorm other ways your staff or members can take action together.
  • Your Talents. Encourage staff – and give them time – to share their talents. Consider creating a mentor team or support staff in volunteering to serve on a community advisory committee or the board of a charitable organization or group that addresses homelessness.
  • Your Support. Make cash donations to local homeless advocacy or care organizations or host a drive to collect new or gently used clothing to donate to homeless support organizations.
Engage
  • Homeless Experience. Invite speakers to join team meetings to talk about the experience of homelessness and the CLOSE TO HOME campaign.
  • New Perspectives. Invite individuals with homeless experience to serve on a community advisory committee or on your board.
  • New Opportunities. Hire someone experiencing homelessness.
  • Caring Card. Hand out the CLOSE TO HOME “Caring Card” to tell others about the campaign and provide support for people currently experiencing homelessness.
